Griot Music/Empress Get Involved in WordPlay

KINGSTON, JA – AUGUST 4, 2008 – Simple Chaos Entertainment plans to keep the ‘WordPlay’ going in Kingston after the successful re-launch of the show in July. The monthly fusion of poetry, live music and art will continue on August 31, 2008 at the Altamont Court Hotel’s Roof Terrace beginning at 7pm. The show is geared toward exposing and cultivating underground genres using the radical blend of ‘floetry’, dub, reggae, old school hip hop, jazz and soul - all performed live.

Griot Music Involvement

Seretse Small, owner of Griot Music, describes his company as a “development focused organization [that is] building something sustainable, not just to “mek a money””. Griot Music focuses on live music and intends to make Jamaica the live music capital of the world by, among other things, getting involved with events such as WordPlay. Griot Music’s involvement as a major sponsor for WordPlay is attributed to the company’s long term goal of realizing what they describe as a ‘Live Music Nation’. According to CEO Seretse Small in his YardEdge interview (published on www.yardedge.net), “There will be quality live music everyday of the week in Kingston for 50 weeks of the year. There is a nation within the nation of Jamaica that many of us are not aware of. It is an army of performers and music lovers whose tastes are extremely diverse and cosmopolitan.”

Eclectic Line- up

The August 31st installment of WordPlay promises to be the premiere in live entertainment and will feature live performances by Empress, who has appeared as host of a number of television programmes such as ‘Musical Passport’ and ‘Reggae Entertainment’ on BET J, ‘Di Show’ on RE TV and most recently as host of ‘Magnum’s Kings and Queens of Dancehall’ shown on TVJ. The magnetic and self-driven singer also co-hosts ‘The Corner’ on News Talk Radio 93fm and describes her musical style as an “eclectic blend of reggae and yard-soul with a touch of jazz”. The multi-talented artiste will be accompanied onstage by the riveting and dynamic UNIA poet Jawari. Also in the line-up are Nina Karle, who has been onstage with talents such as I-Wayne, Richie Spice, Sinead O’Connor and Chuck Fender and Sage of the poetry trio LSX and founder of Tree of Life Productions. The show will be hosted by Mo’ Scherrie – winner of various national awards for poetry, an author with a book in production and the creator and director of Concept One, the name behind videos such as Tarrus Riley’s “She’s Royal”.
